Christine Blosdale (00:47)
I saw
many of us cry or we feel being safe. The masks that we wear are longing to belong. And what happens when we finally have the courage to put the masks down and simply become ourselves? Christine, welcome to Captain Talk. Sarah, thank you so much. I really I've been looking forward to this and especially speaking directly
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (00:50)
Why so many of us hide, why we fear being seen. The masks that we wear our longing to belong.
And what happens when we finally have the courage to put the masks down and simply become ourselves? Christine, welcome to Taboo Talk.
Christine Blosdale (01:17)
to your audience about those those damn masks that we put on and and the fears that we have and how we can how we can really grow from exploring those fears.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (01:29)
Yes, so you said once that many talented people hold back their gifts because of their past experiences and that fear of being seen. Why do you think we're so afraid to be seen and what do you think sits underneath that fear?
Christine Blosdale (01:47)
Well, and I'll tell you the majority of my clients are women in business, solopreneurs, mom preneurs who who are running their their business by themselves. A lot of coaches, right? I've got therapists, I I have some consultants, but mostly women. And I've noticed that it's mostly women who have this fear and it's a bit of imposter syndrome that comes through. Because
In our DNA for centuries, my mother, my mother's mother, my mother's mother's mother, mothers, just throughout the the line of history, women have been told what you want and desire and dream about is not important. You are supposed to take care of your husband, you're supposed to take care of your children. Your job is to make sure that your community is happy and your family is going great and your food on the table. So
All of a sudden now in our timeline, we're told, get out there, go after your dreams. You can do it. Go after your passions. And which I think is an amazing thing. And it should have been for many, many generations, it should have been that message. But we're hardwired in in in our in our DNA to to put ourselves on the backburner. So when we're asked to step into our glory, step into our genius.
That can feel uncomfortable for some people. You add on top of that the classic signs of imposter syndrome, which which are, what are people gonna say about me? What are people gonna think? If I take the opportunity, if I if I speak at this event, if if I go down stage and I if I speak to these people, or if I go on video and I post it on social media, what are people gonna say about me? They might make fun of me. They might
say something mean and I can't handle that. Right? We call
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (03:51)
Yeah, the what's
it gonna cost me if I when I have spent so much time taking care of everybody else, making sure everyone else is okay? What if I suddenly start taking care of me and that changes things for other people? What's that reaction going to be? And then I think
Christine Blosdale (04:13)
And that's because
we're yeah, that's because we're we're also natural caregivers, right? And we want to make sure everybody else is taken care of before we take care of ourselves. And what I like to do with my clients and exercise that I do is because we're such caregivers, I like to say, listen, let's take the focus off of you and how you look or what you're wearing or how you're gonna be perceived. Let's take the focus off of you and let's focus it on the people.
That you claim that you want to serve. So if you're a fitness coach and you're afraid to go out there because people are going to say, girl, you're 62 years old, and what are you doing being a fitness coach? And why are you wearing this? And whatever. All those things that we worry about. Yeah. If you don't show up and you need to be seen and heard in order to be trusted, and you need to be seen and heard and trusted in order to be paid. Okay. So if you want to have a business, you need to be seen and heard.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (04:44)
Mm-hmm.
All that stuff.
Christine Blosdale (05:11)
And of course, trusted. So if you don't show up though, your audience, your clients, your potential clients, they're not going to get your genius. They're not going to get your expertise. They're not going to get your guidance. And so they're not going to make their goals. They're not going to change their habits if it's if you're a fitness coach, let's say. I'm just giving an example. And what's worse is if you don't show up because you're worried about what people are going to say about you.
They don't get their help that they need and worst is they might go to someone who actually causes harm.
So it's your duty and your responsibility to show up for that person. Because we're such caregivers, when you flip the script on many of my clients when I do that, when I flip the script and I say, focus on the people that you want to help and not you and how you're going to be perceived, that help that helps greatly with them. And it's a majority of women, yes, and it's a majority of women who experience it. Men do experience imposter syndrome. Don't get me wrong.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (06:11)
It changes everything.
Christine Blosdale (06:18)
Any overachiever can experience it, but it's a majority of women because men have been told, You can do it. Let's give you the resources. Go get it, you know, all go after your dreams, all those things. So we just we women just need a little bit more, a little bit of help here and there, a little guidance.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (06:37)
And sometimes it is just that flipping the switch on how we how we think about it. I think it was Marian Williamson wrote in she did that it's not our our our dark but our light that frightens us. We ask, who are we to to put that out into the world? But the better question is who are you not to be? Because the world needs that genius, that spark that only
Christine Blosdale (06:42)
Think about it. Yeah.
because the world needs Absolutely that genius, that's that
only you can bring. sometimes we get so used to
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (07:05)
you can bring, but I think sometimes we get so used to
hiding behind all of the different masks that we wear that when we do start to step into that and truly be who we are and we want to be seen, but at the same time, as you said before, there's that fear of, what are people going to think? What are people going to say?
Christine Blosdale (07:25)
zero, ooh, what are people
gonna think? What are people gonna say? Well what do you think one of the reasons we keep putting those masks on and what are you seeing happen and what's the type of it's fantastic It is fantastic when they when they're able to take them off because it's a whole new world f for them. It's a whole new experience.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (07:32)
So what do you think is one of the reasons we keep putting those masks on? And what have you seen happen when people take off?
Christine Blosdale (07:53)
And don't forget, with each step that you take, when you do face your fear, you open up opportunities that you you could never dream of, you wouldn't you would never think of. And it's really hard for when you're in the muck, when you're in that icky feeling and you're stressed about it or you're depressed about it, it's really hard to see what do they say? Well, it's it's hard to see the the the label from inside the jar, right? You you can't you can't see it. But I will tell you.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (08:16)
Yeah. Yeah.
Christine Blosdale (08:22)
That once on the other side of that, there are so many growth opportunities and connections that you can make. Because people people buy from people. And if we don't see you or hear you, we don't know. It's not that we think you're bad or or you're a horrible person or you're stupid. We just don't know that you exist. And we don't know what your gifts are, right? So we need to be able to say that.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (08:49)
Yeah. They're not ignoring you. They
just don't know about you.
Christine Blosdale (08:52)
Just don't know about you. Exactly. So my job is to make you feel confident and comfortable enough to go out into the world and to speak your message and to showcase your gifts. And so that you can get to the point where you say, you know what? I may not be able to do everything for everybody, but what I do, I'm really good. I'm damn good at what I do and I want to help people.
That energy, that message is so powerful. And you'll connect with the right people once you once you cross that that bridge.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (09:29)
Yes. When you find those people who need to hear your message. I know a few years ago, if you had have told me that I'd be sitting where I am, I'd have gone, Yeah, right. I was re I was a remedial massage therapist for twenty-five years and loved what I did. But then circumstances in my life changed and I stepped away from that. But one of the things that had stuck with me was
Christine Blosdale (09:34)
need to hear your message. I know a few years ago you had a told that I'd be singing
With me.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (09:59)
that so many people on my table were telling me similar stories of struggles that they were going through and that they were feeling completely alone in it. And my thought was, well you're obviously not because you're all telling me the same thing.
Christine Blosdale (10:03)
that they were going through and that they were feeling completely alone in it.
Right.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (10:16)
And then was, well, part of why they're feeling alone is because they don't hear other people's stories of similar struggles and I wanted to do something about that. So I started a podcast where we talk about that stuff.
Christine Blosdale (10:35)
Brilliant.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (10:37)
And now I get to again say, My job's way too much fun to be called a job.
Christine Blosdale (10:38)
Again, say head joke's way
too much fun to be over joke. Yeah. Yeah. When you look forward to Monday mornings, you know you're doing the right thing.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (10:51)
When you just get to show up and do what you do and know that it helps others and makes a difference. And as you said before, it's about that focus on who you serve, who you're here to help, not so much on you.
Christine Blosdale (11:10)
Absolutely. It changes the game. It really does. It changes the game. And don't forget too, we're there's a bit of hard wiring with us, as humans in general, that we don't want to get kicked out of the cave. We don't want to stand out too much. And and and being from America and an immigrant here to Australia, which I'm a citizen now of Australia, thank you very much. thank you. but when I first came here
There was this thing, the tall poppy syndrome, right? And it's huge in Australia. And that means for those that don't understand what the heck we're talking about, it's basically like don't act too big for your britches, girl. Like, don't flash that you're the number one real estate agent in your area. Or don't don't be don't be too big, right? because
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (11:41)
It's huge in Australia.
Yeah. Don't let your
ego run away with itself.
Christine Blosdale (12:04)
Exactly. So that was the environment where I came in and and here I am. I'm a coach that helps people stand out. And you know, I was like in the beginning it was like people were like, What are you talking about? I you know, I I I don't want to stand out. And
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (12:20)
You big
brush American, how would I want to do that?
Christine Blosdale (12:23)
Exactly. It's changed though. Luckily it's changed. Every year it gets it gets better. People realize that they have to you have to let people know your your gifts, right? You have to do that. But in the beginning it was like, ooh, that's that's a little difficult. And here's the thing. When you say, and I c have no problem saying to anybody anywhere, I am really good at what I do. I love what I do. And I'm ve extremely good at it.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (12:26)
Mm, it has.
Christine Blosdale (12:51)
And I have reviews and testimonials and videos of clients, everybody saying what experience they had with me. So there is no ego involved and there is no arrogance. It's confidence. And that's what I love. I love helping develop that in my clients. And if I could work with younger people, if I could work with, you know, I mean, the younger the better to have developed that self-confidence. Our children need to grow up with that.
Because right now in our world there's they're getting different messages, right? So but I'll take you I'll I'll take you whatever age you come to me. But you know, but it we it is a message that we do and and it and and you could be a good role model by by doing those things, I believe.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (13:31)
Yeah.
And I think that's what we're we're called to do in so many ways is to help instill that confidence and that knowing who you are and being safe and comfortable to express that. There's so much hiding, there's so much downplaying of of those gifts of the not wanting to stand out now.
Christine Blosdale (13:57)
Yes. And you touched on it.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (14:09)
Sometimes hiding isn't a weakness, it's it's protection. Our our brains are hardwired to keep us safe. But so how do you take it of gently getting somebody from that space where, no, I I'm too scared to to go out there to actually having that confidence to step out there because they know that they're actually safe to do that.
Christine Blosdale (14:12)
I think isn't a weakness, it's it's protection. Self pres preservation, yeah.
Yeah. Because I normally
don't have actually fight to do that. Well, it all starts with with a a chat of a simple conversation that I have with every every single person that comes into my world. I I need to sit down and talk to you to find out where you've w what you've been doing and what you want to do. That helps me guide you. So having that it's and it's a comfortable, it's a it's a it's just like a
Sitting down and having a cup of coffee with somebody, right? Or or a glass of wine, whatever you prefer. But I like to also, I always like to bring in not parables, but analogies or stories for people because that they're able to get it. So when it comes to that thing of of being afraid of stepping out or stretching a little bit, it does go down to that hardwired thing of we don't want to be kicked out of the cave.
Because if we get kicked out of the cave, a dinosaur might eat us. It's self preservation, right? And here's the thing. So that's why we assimilate and we go, yeah, I sure, I like that too. you know, we t we we don't want to be kicked out of the cave. We we don't want to be singled out. Because are we blending that Yes.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (15:50)
So we blend in and we we become
chameleon like in that we we change how we blend in depending on the environment that we're in.
Christine Blosdale (15:55)
Yes, yes.
But here's the thing, what I tell my clients is first of all, maybe instead of being in a cave surrounded by these cave people that you ha that you have to change yourself for and and dim your light, hide your light, maybe you should start your own cave. Or maybe there's other caves out there, but you didn't know because you were in your cave that you're in now. But maybe there's other caves.
With people that are different and that are like you.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (16:37)
And maybe you need to go find one of those. Find that room that you you belong in. And I suppose for so many of us, it's not even the the standing out or we're searching for that belonging and for that space where the other people around us give us permission to shine brighter rather than to dim that light.
Christine Blosdale (16:40)
You need to go find from it for
Yeah.
Very key. And that is your immediate surroundings. That's your family. That's your the the the structure. Your parents, of course, but your community, you know, f for for a very long time for many people. Those people that are in the cave that you're afraid of leaving, they're saying to you, Don't go out there. It's scary out there. You're safe with us. You just need to tone it down a bit, right? You just need to do what we want you to do.
And if you do, we'll protect you, you're safe. That's that's like kidnapping. I mean that's that's that's that's not that's not a healthy way to be.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (17:45)
It's a very narrow experience.
Christine Blosdale (17:48)
Absolutely. But we we if you don't know, if you've never thought that there might be other caves and other people out there, or better yet, that you can build your own cave, your own world, right? Then i if you don't know that's a possibility, then you never reach for it. And that's what happens with a lot of
A lot of people, especially a lot of women, very talented, gifted, amazing women. Yeah.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (18:20)
Yeah, because we're afraid if we if we reach out and go for that, whatever it is that thing that we want, that we're gonna fall flat on our face or we're yeah. It's scary stepping out of that cave, but I remember reading years ago, if you never cross the road, you'll never get hit by a bus. You also never find out what's on the other side. And sometimes the finding out what's on the other side is worth the
Christine Blosdale (18:46)
Yes.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (18:50)
The chance of dodging a bus or two.
Christine Blosdale (18:54)
Well, and also if you have children, I know you do. I have child I have we have two children. And we went through this thing with our daughter, who's nineteen now, but when she was a little bit younger in her teens, she would she didn't want to try different things because she said, If I can't do it perfectly, I don't want to try it 'cause I'll look like a fool. And that broke my heart.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (19:17)
Mm.
Christine Blosdale (19:18)
I said, how do you learn how how are you gonna grow? You need to try things that you're not perfect at. You need to try them just for the heck of trying them. And you never know. You might actually really love it. It might become a new hobby or it might be a a new job opportunity or introduce you to people that you you know, it it's like it's like when the when your when your kids do have that sense of a bit of adventure and
We'll see what happens. It's like when they first take their first flight or their trip, their vacation with their friends. You know, you're nervous as a parent. You're like, my God, I hope nothing happens to them. But you're excited for them. You're like, yes, they're in Europe. You know, they're they're they're experiencing something that they haven't before. But you you need you would not do that with your kids. You would not say, You cannot try new things unless you're perfect. But with ourselves we do. Yeah.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (20:10)
Right. And where did I get that idea?
Christine Blosdale (20:13)
Exactly.
Yeah.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (20:17)
What just popped into my head when you said that was how many things would be missing from the world if everybody had that idea of I'm not going to try anything because I might not be good at it. Do you know how many times it took, how many tries it took Edison to develop the light bulb?
Christine Blosdale (20:41)
Or the Wright brothers with the with the plane, with the flights? To fly? Yeah.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (20:43)
The right brothers to fly? Yeah.
So anything's like thousand goes. So he knows nine hundred and ninety nine ways to get it wrong.
Christine Blosdale (20:56)
Exactly.
Exactly. But you don't and and the thing is too is that that's growth.
You know, the things when I work with my clients, I'm not some guru sitting on top of a mountaintop saying, I have all of the answers. But I do know the things that I've used that have helped me and that I use for my clients that help them get seen and heard and tr paid and all that good stuff. I know all those things, but it comes from trying all these things throughout my many years in my career, trying things and
They didn't work out or trying this and it faltered. Or so my thing is that I want to save you from making the mistakes. It'll save you time, energy, frustration. So instead of going down by yourself and making these mistakes and being frustrated and then quitting or giving up, allow me to help you avoid those landmines, right? Because they're out there. But let's let's avoid them.
Let's let's make it a little bit smoother trip. Yeah.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (22:10)
I know for myself with all of the client work I've done with you is you tend to see similar patterns and similar roadblocks. So have you noticed any common stories between people of like the same that they're carrying the same thing or they're confronting the same challenge, which is one of those roadblocks that you can help them avoid. So are there particular ones that you see over and over?
Christine Blosdale (22:39)
Well, there's there's the camp that have that a bit of that imposter syndrome that, you know, don't don't feel that they're worthy or that they're skilled enough, those people. But actually what it is is that a lot of folks that come to me, they're excited, they want to start a business, they wanna start be a coach or whatever it is, but they get frustrated because they're not instantly successful, right?
I put up a website and I'm doing my social media and I'm not getting clients or I'm not a millionaire. Okay. but also what it is is that they do not see it from the outside. Again, we can't see the outside the outside of the label from inside the jar.
So they're like, I'm doing all the right things. But yet when I go and I look at their social media for like I go to their website, I'm I still don't understand what it is that they do. They're not clear. So that lack of clarity is confusing to the marketplace. It's confusing to people, right? So you need to be really clear. Hi, I'm so and so. I help people, blah, blah, blah, blah.
Right? My perfect client. Yeah. My perfect client are people who boo, boo, boop, boo. Right? We need to be so clear because we're bombarded with information. We're we're we're overstimulated as human beings. If it's something that's complicated and I gotta read a novel in order to un try and grasp who you are, I'm out. I don't have time for that. I don't have time for that. So we need to be super, super clear. And that's probably the
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (23:59)
Thirty seconds in an elevator.
Christine Blosdale (24:27)
Biggest thing that I s that I see right away. Yeah.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (24:31)
Yep. Clear communication
seems to be a a dying art in a lot of ways. And you're right, part of it's that yeah. And we are bombarded by so much information that if you can't make it easy for people, your message is gonna get lost in the noise.
Christine Blosdale (24:37)
Yes. Yes. And it's so valuable.
If you can't make it easy for people, your message is
Yes.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (24:54)
Yep. And like for those of us who have have young kids or who have kids with extra needs or who are caring for elderly parents who are juggling all the balls, they've got ninety nine balls in the air.
Don't go throwing a hundred at me, because I just might drop them all. So it's the if it's too hard, it's too complicated, it takes too long. I'm not going to do it because I just don't have the bandwidth for that.
Christine Blosdale (25:25)
Exactly. There's there's there's power in simplicity and clarity and authenticity. Again, you don't need to be somebody else that you're not. You need to be we we are craving as a society authentic people, people that we can trust. So if you can like real connection. Yes. And if you can communicate that your authenticity and that you're trustworthy.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (25:41)
Okay,
authentic people and real connection with them.
Christine Blosdale (25:55)
If you can communicate that, you're way ahead of the game.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (26:01)
That's a a big thing at the moment 'cause there is so much.
inauthentic behaviour, inauthentic things happening out there. So that when you are just who you are, it it comes across and people appreciate that.
Christine Blosdale (26:11)
yeah.
Yes. Again, the it's a great commodity, trustworthiness and authenticity. 'Cause you turn on your TV or you turn on your phone you go on your phone, social media. You we know now when people are lying to us. We know it. We can we see it. We can smell it. Right?
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (26:23)
Mm. Yes.
Yep.
And in this ever changing world of AI, etc., we can tell when it's a real message or when, as my children call it, it's AI slop. It's like yeah. I know I I saw something the other day and it's like I'm pretty sure while it looks like a certain actor, I won't say who it was.
Christine Blosdale (26:50)
Slop. Yes. Slop.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (27:05)
Well it looks like a certain actor and it sounds like that certain actor, I'm a hundred percent certain it is not him because he would not be doing that.
Christine Blosdale (27:14)
Right.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (27:15)
And it's just
like, Yeah, I don't think that's the kind of story he would be acting in or the acting in it would be way better.
Christine Blosdale (27:21)
And that's it
And that's the confusing part. This is the first time in human history where we can be shown a video or a film. We can be shown something and our eyes can deceive us because it looks so real. and you know, there there's great creative possibilities with that, and then there's also things, nefarious things that can happen with that, right? It's like it's like a knife.
You can use the knife to build you know, to to cut vines and build a hut or build a house or whatever. That knife can be used for a a lot of amazing things. But it can all you know, it can also be used to harm people. So we need to use AI technology wisely, yeah.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (28:09)
Yes, we have to use this.
We need to use the tools at our disposal for good not to do not to do harm. And I know I've had with my kids the rule when it comes to social media or anything that they put out into the world or anything that they're they're taking in, check your facts, make sure that it is that it is true. If you're going to say something, is it true? Is it kind? Is it helpful? If it's not, then maybe don't say it. And yeah, don't
Christine Blosdale (28:19)
Yes.
the world or anything that they're they're taking in. Check your facts, make sure that it is Yeah. That it is true. If you're going to say something, is it true, is it kind, is it hustle? If it's not, then maybe don't say it. Yeah.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (28:43)
on on social media, etc. Don't put something out there that you wouldn't say to that person's face. And then my favorite, if you don't want your grandmother to read it, don't put it there.
Christine Blosdale (28:53)
You don't want your grandma to read it, but
here's another one you can add to that. If if if you ever want to go for an really amazing job opportunity, don't post something on social media that is not gonna get you hired.
'Cause they'll find it. Those job recruiters at HR department will find it.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (29:22)
Yes. There has to be some advantage then to have been raised generation X where we didn't have to deal with all that.
Christine Blosdale (29:31)
It was a very different yeah. I s I feel like my grandmother sometimes when I was a little kid, we didn't have to yeah, no. I got to we got to use our imagination. We got we got to be very creative. And our children are are creative now with different tools, I always say. They have the ability to have different tools. But I did yeah, and I grew up quite I poor. I didn't ha we didn't have a lot of money at all.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (29:39)
But I'm not the only one that happens to.
Mm.
Christine Blosdale (30:01)
And so I had to I had to be creative. I had to use my imagination and and and play with others. The thing that I've noticed with our kids that that that made me sad is that that sense of isolation and and which grows depression and anxiety when you have kids that are just locked in, they're just in their room all day on a screen. and they're not going out into the world. They're not they're not getting it's not even about just the fresh air, which is
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (30:15)
Mm.
Christine Blosdale (30:31)
It's beneficial, sunshine and fresh air. But that social interaction, that that we as humans so we can see mannerisms and and cues, social cues and things like that and experience the world. That's the thing that's kinda saddened me, you know, a bit about our kids. Yeah.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (30:49)
Yeah.
Cause
As humans, we crave that connection to others that are like us and that sense of belonging. And belonging and fitting in are not not the same thing, but we all want that space where we truly belong.
Christine Blosdale (31:07)
we truly feel
that. Yes. Yeah. And where we're free to use our voice and to be confident in who we are and what we give to the world. Well question for you. Mm-hmm. Because you've watched people step into their voice and embrace
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (31:11)
And where we're free to to use our voice and to be confident in who we are and what we give to the world? So, question for you. Because you've watched people step into their voice and embrace that
that confidence and that authenticity in sharing their message. What changes first? Do you think it's that embracing that confidence or more an identity?
Christine Blosdale (31:32)
in sharing
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (31:40)
shifters that they get more comfortable with who they are and sharing that with the world.
Christine Blosdale (31:41)
the message. What changes first? Do you think it's well embracing that confidence or more an identity shift of what they get more comfortable with who they are and sharing that with the work I think the shift really happens in the doing. Right? So I have I have a client, a gentleman here in Australia, whose business is very niche. It's it
very, very specific type of business. And I was like, you his name was Stuart. I said, Stuart, you need to, you need to be seen and heard in order for people to know you exist. Right. And so that means you do need to start doing some some video. and especially since your business it's it's it's the website is a little bit complicated, right? It needs a little bit of direction, a tour guide, so to speak.
And he was like, I've never because I'm not a video guy, you know, I'm not comfortable in front of a camera. And I said, I think you're gonna I think you're gonna be okay. And I said, Here's the thing. You like to tell a good yarn, you like to tell a good story, don't you? He goes, yeah. I go I got a lot of right? That's your typical Aussie. Umry for every occasion.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (32:55)
Story for every occasion.
Christine Blosdale (32:59)
And so I said, Well, because he had specific books. He had like collectors editions of books and things. And I said, For your social media, why don't you just talk about a particular book that you have that's a collector's edition and why you love it? And he lit up like a Christmas tree. He's like, I could talk about, you know, this book. I forget what he what he said, or maybe it was Moby Dick or something. I don't know. He talked about this particular book and his eyes lighted lit up. And I said, There, there.
Now what I did, because on his own, he wouldn't feel so confident. So what I did in our in our coaching session was I said, I'm gonna hit record. You're gonna tell I'm gonna ask you a question about Moby Dick, whatever the book was. I'm gonna ask you a question and you're gonna answer by looking in the camera. I'm not gonna be on the screen because I'll I'll go I'll be the director behind the scenes, okay? And I said, I just want you to talk about it and don't don't stop. Just keep talking about it.
And tell me why this is a cool book and why this particular collector's edition is a good book. So when I allowed him to do that, he got into the flow of it. He got into the story and the excitement of it. And I stopped that recording. I actually edited for for him, but I showed him how to do it. and then I showed it back to him and I said, Do you see this? And he was impressed with himself, you know? He was like, Wow.
I can do this. Now he does it on the regular. Now he's so comfortable. He's got music underneath him. He's got captions. You know, he's he he's loving it and he is understanding that you can say a lot and you can make a big impact with video because people can hear you and they can see you and they're drawn in. So so that was somebody who in the beginning was like, I don't think I'm gonna be doing video, I don't think I'm I'm not that kind of a guy.
Two now he's doing lots and lots of video content, which I love seeing.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (35:02)
Yeah, seeing that shift and seeing people realize that they can do it and that the only thing that was holding them back was themselves.
Christine Blosdale (35:11)
Yes. Yeah, exactly.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (35:15)
So what gives you hope for the future?
Christine Blosdale (35:22)
Mm-mm. I believe there's so much that's going on too, and it can be quite overwhelming. But I think that we're all waking up. I think that's why it's so important that we do take control and take our power back as humans in whatever ways we can, right? So it means that if you're in a dysfunctional relationship.
Taking your power back and getting out of that dysfunctional relationship, right? taking your power back and showing your children what it is to go after your dreams, to go after your passion, so that they can see that and they can emulate that. I think those little baby steps are very powerful and they have a ripple effect. If we don't do anything or we say, I can't do anything to change the world, that's a defeatist.
place to be and I think we need to just take those little baby steps and that will help improve the world. I think it's so important. Go after your dreams. Yeah.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (36:28)
If we each do that one little thing that that we can do to make a difference, yes, we won't solve all the world's problems in in one go, but sometimes it's just helping that one person make that one step and that's what shifts things.
Christine Blosdale (36:33)
Yeah.
In in one row. Sometimes it's just fucking bad.
Absolutely. Because it's the ripple effect 'cause then they aff then they affect other people's lives and it just goes on and on and on. Yeah.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (36:57)
Yeah. So if somebody listening today's spent years hiding behind that mask and telling themselves that they they can't do it because somewhere along the line they they learnt that it it wasn't safe to do that or maybe toll poppy syndrome came and and smacked them hard. What would you want them to know?
Christine Blosdale (37:24)
on the other side of that fear, it it's it it's it can be something absolutely incredible. And if you need my thing is is that if you need somebody that you can talk to, find you know, find a Sarah, find a Christine, reach out to us. That's our that's our job and our lot in life is to help people. I've I I fancy myself more of a teacher than a coach.
But when I was little and I was dreaming of being, you know, I I I dreamt of being a teacher because we didn't have coaches back then. We had coaches were like you know, basketball coaches or football coaches. not not business coaches or marketing coaches. Yes, exactly. So so reach out to somebody that you that you feel that you can trust and be vulnerable with and and and just try. Just give it a go. Just give it a go.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (37:58)
Yeah.
Yeah, sporting coaches, not anything else.
Just take that baby step. So yeah. Now if people would like to connect with you more, as you just said, we want people to find those people that they can connect with. So where's the best place for them to connect with you and learn about your work?
Christine Blosdale (38:23)
Yes. Yes.
more as you just said. We want people those people that they can connect
The easiest way they can get in touch with me is going to expertauthoritycoach.com. And when they go to that website, there are plenty of opportunities for people to have that absolutely free chat with me, that coffee chat, so to speak. We can sit down and find out what you're doing and what you want to do, more importantly, what you want to do. And that's absolutely free for people. So they can go to my website, expertauthoritycoach.com.
And also on that website are links to all my books, my latest book, which is the expert authority code. That is also available there. and that is something I think that people even if they if they're too shy to actually book a call with me and they're like, No, I c I I can't talk to Christy for whatever reason. get the book. Get the book. Because the and the Kindle version has clickable links.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (39:33)

Christine Blosdale (39:39)

So you can get the the paperback book or you can get the Kindle version, whatever you prefer. And I'm working on the audiobook. It's gonna be a little while, but I'm working on the audiobook.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (39:58)

If I'm really into a book or to into an author, I will get the the I'll get the paperback version and I'll also get the audio the audible, the audio book or sp on Spotify. But I'll listen to I'll listen it to it and I'll also read it. Depends on who who wrote it, the narrator.

Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (40:40)
Thank you.

Because we all we all need that encouragement and that reminder that showing up as who we are is really important and sharing our gifts with the world are really important. I firmly believe that each and every one of us.
Christine Blosdale (41:12)
really important. I firmly believe that each and every one of us
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (41:17)
has unique gifts and something special that only we can bring to the world and the world needs us to actually bring that.
Christine Blosdale (41:17)
has unique gifts and something special that only can bring to the world and the world needs us to actually bring that. Absolutely.
Jeff Ross & Sarah Jordan-Ross (41:26)
Yeah. Yeah.
